Great! Why watch it?

Netflix has finally released it’s long awaited comedy series Master of None. It stars comedian Aziz Ansari as Dev, a 30 year old working actor in New York City. He doesn’t have a wife, kids or any prospect for a serious relationship. The show follows Dev as he struggles to make his way through everyday life, with a little help from his friends.

I know this sounds like every other thirty something comedy on network television, but Master of None is something special. Ansari’s stand up revolves around his remarkable ability to tell a story. He paints a picture so well it makes the audience feel like they were actually there, and he accomplishes this with just a microphone. Imagine what he is capable of with a film crew and a cast of talented comedians. It’s as if his stand up has come to life.

The writing is phenomenal, but the cast is perfect. Ansari surrounds himself with his lesser known comedian friends, Eric Wareheim, Kelvin Yu, and Lena Waithe. Together they create a friend group I can confidently say, we all want to be a part of. Their natural chemistry makes for some hilarious ad-lib moments that just can’t be written. Another flawless casting choice was Dev’s parents. Ansari brought in his actual parents to play the part. If you’re wondering where Aziz got his comic charm, look no further. Shoukath and Fatima Ansari are actually hilarious and often steal the show.

For a series to be truly relatable, it can’t be filtered. I love that Netflix doesn’t have to follow network standards and allows it’s creators to present life as it actually is. Real people curse and sometimes the subject matter in our lives isn’t PG. Master of None isn’t afraid to push the boundaries and discuss situations many are too embarrassed to talk about. That’s what’s great about giving a stand up comedian full reign to make a series.

If you are a fan of Aziz Ansari, you will love Master of None. Even if you aren’t a big fan, I’d recommend giving this show a shot. It’s the intelligent, true to life comedy we’ve all been waiting for. The first season is now available in it’s entirety on Netflix.
